Wanna Be Home With Your Kids AND Save The World?

by healthybydesignblog

I’m a single mom. I certainly didn’t expect to be. It’s hard sometimes, a lot of the time really. I’m still figuring things out, but about two years ago I made a huge leap of faith in regards to my career. I shut down my small home-based advertising agency and web-design company to literally save the world, or as many people as I could anyway. As many as who would listen.

I need to provide a little background. My daughter is now 13, but at age 5 she was diagnosed with a hormonal disorder called PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). The most urgent aspect of this was her blood sugar, she was pre-diabetic. Picture this, at that time I was about 250 lbs, addicted to Mt. Dew, stubborn as heck, and my body was racked with both Osteo and Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had just gone through a house fire and a traumatic marriage which ended in divorce. I had little hope, few resources, and was just surviving emotionally from one day to the next. I hope you have never been there, or somewhere similar, but perhaps you have.

Shortly thereafter, more bad news. My father was diagnosed with Parkinsons, my mother with a blood disorder, and my younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 41. I’m not one to always follow the rules in the first place, and after seeing my grandfather suffer through traditional cancer treatment, I was actively reading, researching and asking questions about NATURAL ways to help the people I loved. I learned that NUTRITION could not only PREVENT much of what my family was going through, but could possibly stop the progression of some of their symptoms, and even possibly REVERSE some of it. I was so excited!!!!

This is really where the Lord stepped in. As a single mom, I was working terribly long hours with my advertising biz, and was always feeling guilty for not having more time to spend with my daughter, even though we were homeshooling. It was fun when I started, but then the housing market crashed, it really impacted my business, and mommy wasn’t so much fun anymore. She was wiggin’ out! SO, I was considering a part-time job or in-home biz to add to my already crazy schedule. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see myself as a salesperson. I hated even selling Girl Scout cookies as a kid. The idea of running up and down the road begging friends to buy stuff they may not even need in the first place just didn’t appeal to me. However, my cousin Teresa had told me about Shaklee vitamins when I was in my 20’s, and I never paid her any mind. After all, I wasn’t gonna ever get old or sick, right? Fast forward into my 40’s, I’m getting old and I’m definitely sick, and so is everyone I care about. For the first time, I was ready to listen about nutrition and this Shaklee company she told me about.

Turns out, the founder, Dr. Forrest Shaklee, invented the very first multi-vitamin and he was a pretty incredible guy. Turns out, they have a zero tolerance for contamination in their products with higher standards than the FDA, AND they were environmentally proactive before being “green” was cool. I have heard all kinds of testimonies from regular folks just like you and me. One day everything in life was okay, the next day, either they – or someone they loved – got a scary diagnosis and their universe was rocked. Their lives or the lives of someone they loved was spared or improved by this company and their science. This is something I am excited about and can’t help but share with friends and neighbors, and you. This company loves fostering healthy happy homes, where moms can raise their own kids and make a salary replacement income while working part-time from home.

SO, if you are one of those, who like me, want to save the world, even if sometimes it doesn’t want to be saved, AND you’d really like to be home more with your kids, I suggest you consider Shaklee. I am more in love with the MISSION of this company than when I started four years ago. AND, I have lost 60 lbs, no longer need ANY pain meds for my arthritis – in fact, I don’t even consider myself to have it any longer! I am still trying to help my family, and my neighbors, and my friends, and again, anyone who will listen. I have awesome stories to share that are forthcoming. I hope you will be as inspired as I have been!

The Logical Approach Is Not Necessarily The Best Approach

by healthybydesignblog

iStock_000004889191XSmallRecently, I have been absolutely fascinated with the subject of treatments that seem logical, but don’t necessarily work, or at least don’t work as well as another treatment that may seem completely illogical.

Let me remind you, I am not a doctor or a nutritionist. I am simply a mom, a daughter, a sister and friend to people who are struggling with their health every day. I have had my own health struggles as well. My purpose for writing this article is simply to open your mind to possibilities, and to share what I feel is useful information for people who may be suffering with any of these conditions. I often forget that there are many people today who are hearing about alternative approaches to health conditions for the very first time. It’s even funny to me that using nutrition to heal your body is considered alternative. It would seem more appropriate to call a man-made drug therapy approach “alternative”. But I digress…

“Lorenzo’s Oil”

The first time I was introduced to this concept of an illogical approach to treatment working was while watching the movie, “Lorenzo’s Oil”, starring Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte. The young man in the movie, is diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy, which is a disorder which results in the accumulation of very-long chain fatty acids in tissues throughout the body. The doctors told her the logical thing to do was to limit fats in her sons diet, but when she went against that recommendation and actually gave him an oil that was a combination of two specific long chain fatty acids, one of them being olive oil, he showed improvement. Normally someone would die within two years of this diagnosis, but Lorenzo lived to be 30 years old, thanks to an illogical approach to his condition, and one brave and determined set of parents.

ADD/ADHD

For anyone whose kids are not having issues with ADD/ADHD, you might assume that the “medication” these kids are put on is a medication that would slow them down or mellow them out, right? They’re frequently all over the place, so it seems logical, to give them a sedative. But the drugs that are given to kids with ADD/ADHD is actually the equivalent of SPEED. These drugs accelerate their minds, and causes the manifestation of the “problem behavior” to minimize.  Most kids with ADD/ADHD are quite brilliant. It’s like having a high perforance engine in a luxury car, but giving it cheap gas. However, if you’re shocked that kids are given speed, join the club. I have been told by experts that improving nutrition and eliminating junk food, fast food, chemicals, dyes, etc can accomplish similar results. But this is not an article on how to help ADD/ADHD. This is however, an article about a treatment that seems illogical at first glance – such as giving speed to a hyperactive child – working,  when a logical treatment, such as giving that same child a sedative, would not work.

Reflux / GERD

People who are suffering from reflux or GERD are plagued by what seems like too much acid. So the logical solution is to put them on acid blockers, right? Wrong! Because of a lack of nutrition, stress and/or the body not getting enough acidic foods in the diet, the acid pumps in the stomach are not so much over-producing acid as they are malfunctioning. Instead of a steady stream, or the regular functioning, they are putting off surges of acid which is actually just a manifestation of the acid pumps not having what they need to do their job properly. Acid blockers make the problem worse, and you are even less able to digest your food. This means fewer nutrients are actually being absorbed by your body to feed your organs, cells, etc. But again, this article is about what does work. A friend of mine and I began researching natural ways to deal with this, and we found that taking a teaspoon of vinegar, yes vinegar, a couple times a week, eating apples, and using fish oil and resveratrol supplements completely healed her stomach. She had been on an acid blocker for years and had felt terrible, and her hair had started getting really thin. Now she rarely has issues with reflux at all and feels great!

Kidney Stones

Dr. Stephen Chaney, a professor of nutrition at UNC-Chapel Hill told me once that Eastern North Carolina (where I live) is the “kidney stone belt.” A good friend of mine suffers with them frequently. Often what can cause kidney stones is drinking water that has calcium in it. There is more than one form of calcium by the way. There are forms that our body can absorb and forms it can’t. The calcium in our water in this area, is a kind that is not absorbable by our bodies and so it ends up collecting in our kidneys and forming stones. It might seem logical to reduce a person’s calcium intake if they were suffering with kidney stones, but actually, they need MORE calcium, as long as it’s a kind that the body can easily absorb and put to work. The bad calcium causes the good calcium to be leeched from bones and teeth. (A good water filter is also highly recommended!)

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

In the last several years, I have known several people who were diagnosed with MS. One of the first was a friend of mine from church. She was a young mother in her 30’s, and she actually died not from the MS, but from an experimental drug that she had agreed to try. Her immune system was so severely depressed, that a dormant virus that lives in all of us rose up and destroyed her brain. This made a HUGE impact on me, not only because her life ended way too soon, but she left three little girls behind. I felt that she had been given false hope, and had merely been a human guinea pig for the pharmaceutical industry. Shortly thereafter, I lost another friend, but whether it was the condition itself or the meds, I do not know. However, my cousin had a friend who was also diagnosed with MS and she referred him to her Shaklee lady. This man is using one pharmaceutical, Avonex, but also using Shaklee nutrition to manage this condition. He is doing SO WELL, that his doctors gave him a free MRI, because they could not explain why he was doing so well. This young man believes, and I believe the difference is the supplements that he’s using to “feed” his immune system. I have heard others who were bed-ridden and wheel chair bound tell of remarkable recoveries using pretty much the same regimen he has used.

MS is an autoimmune disease. This means the immune system appears to be attacking it’s own body as if it were an outside invader. Many MS treatments these days are immune suppressant pharmaceuticals, because it seems logical that if the immune system is hurting the body, it should be suppressed, right? No! When you feed the immune system with the nutrition that strengthens it, rather than rising up and hurting the body more, it is better able to regulate itself, and symptoms are greatly minimized.

I find this absolutely fascinating!

First of all, it only shows me once again that although man’s wisdom is remarkable, it’s still very limited in regards to God’s amazing creation of the human body. I am also in awe of the lengths we will go to fix what’s wrong with this incredible creation with a man-made solution, when simply giving the body what it was DESIGNED TO USE AS FUEL IN THE FIRST PLACE, reducing stress, and eliminating toxins will solve many of our health problems.

Again, as I said in the beginning of this article. I am searching for answers like many others. I am not the final authority on ANYTHING. But I hope these examples will broaden your thinking on what may truly work, versus what seems to be logical.

8 Out of 10 American Kids’ Lives Expected To Be 17 Years Shorter Than Their Parents

by healthybydesignblog

Boo! This Is Frightening!!

When I heard this statistic, I only heard the first part, “8 out of 10 kids today will live shorter lives than their parents.” I thought that was shocking enough, in America? Today? But even so, I assumed maybe they meant by a shorter life span, they meant shorter by six months, maybe two to five years at the most. Then while listening to a recent Shaklee audio file from Jude Peskuski, the originator of Shaklee’s Project MAHMA (Mom’s At Home Making A Difference), I was informed for the first time that our kids’ life spans are expected to be 17 YEARS SHORTER THAN THEIR PARENTS. My jaw just dropped and I stared at my computer in disbelief. (If you would like a copy of that audio file, email me and I will forward it to you.)

Their Daily Diet Is Killing Our Kids Slowly, But Surely

I used the bucket of Halloween candy as a visual, because of the time of year, not because candy is the primary culprit. The culprit is their daily diet! Things like processed chicken patties and “nuggets”, sandwich meats, microwave and toaster oven meals. Processed meats, genetically modified (GMO) wheat and corn products, preservatives, food additives, food colorings, antibiotics, steroids, growth hormones, high fructose corn syrup, and the list goes on and on.

Many kids start their day with things like cereal or pop tarts, toaster pastries, etc. If it’s not labelled as non-GMO, then what you’re feeding them is genetically modified wheat or corn. Not to mention the food colorings, sugar, and preservatives. Food allergies are a main concern in everything from ADD/ADHD to bed wetting.

Everyday we put stuff in front of our kids that may look like food, but has little or no nutritional value. And our kids are overfed and overweight, but under-nourished. The closest some kids get to vegetables are french fries and tatertots with ketchup. I took a couple of my daughter’s friends to a restaurant once, and one of them had NEVER HAD A SALAD IN HER LIFE. Oh-my-Lord!

Starting Early Is Best! But It’s Never Too Late To Get Started!

It’s just too easy to start kids out with the pre-packaged, cutesy boxed kid food when they’re babies and toddlers. We’re too tired to cook after working all day! Busy working moms have a challenge in front of them. I’m a single working mom, so I know first hand. But if you start them out eating veggies, rather than crackers and Ramen noodles, they will learn to eat that way. If you didn’t get off to such a good start, your kids won’t be thrilled about it, but you can begin introducing new things into their diet, and start taking some things out. Start with soda. Get the stuff outta your house!!! It’s the number one contributor to obesity, contributes to a fertile environment for cancer growth, and weakens teeth and bones. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Diet sodas are EVEN WORSE! The artificial sweeteners in diet soda are carcinogenic! They can cause symptoms similar to Multiple Sclerosis (MS)! And as I am learning more all the time from friends who are hooked on them, they are extremely addicting.  When I was growing up, I thought the only people who drank water were the ones who couldn’t afford soda. Boy did I have a lot to learn!

Before my daughter’s diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which makes her pre-diabetic, I was tremendously overweight and figured I’d be that way the rest of my life. Skinny people made me sick. I thought I had just lost the skinny lottery, you know, and my poor kid, well she’d just inherited my bad genes. I have since learned that only between 10-20% of our health has to do with inherited traits, and that a whopping 60% is directly related to diet and lifestyle. Whoa! I had to take some responsibility for my daughter’s future health! Not only could our unhealthy lifestyle cause her to struggle with weight as I had most of my life, but she could end up with a long list of health problems if she were to ever develop full blown Type 2 diabetes. By the way, Type 2 Diabetes used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes, but they can’t call it that any longer, because so many of our kids who were not born  with Type 1, are getting Type 2 because of their diets. Most people born with Type 1 never reach the age of 50. I wonder if the increase of Type 2 diabetes is a big chunk of that shortened lifespan?

Also, with my daughter’s condition, her diet could impact whether she could have kids later in life or not. How I feed her today may determine whether I ever have any grandchildren! But even in general, scientists are learning more all the time that even what the grandparents have eaten can affect the health of their grandchildren. The drugs and pharmaceuticals that the grandparents took when they were younger, can impact the health and development of their grandchildren. You may say, “Well, I turned out alright!” But your children’s generation is different. Our food supply has never been so contaminated and tainted and processed. Fast food consumption has increased over 2000% since your childhood. Just think about it. How often did you get to go to McDonalds as a kid? How often do you take your kids today? If you’re like me, there’s a huge difference in how many hamburgers and chicken mcnuggets I consumed, and how many my daughter has. Less than 2% of people get the nutrients they need for basic good health today.

What Can We Do?

Buy food in it’s simplest, most unprocessed form. For example, don’t buy instant potatoes, buy a bag of potatoes and peel the darned things. Although, I don’t really recommend potatoes that much anyway. Buy frozen veggies instead of canned veggies. Make a pot of soup instead of buying canned soup. Want to make a turkey sandwich, buy a free-range turkey breast, bake it and slice it for sandwiches rather than buy processed turkey loaf. Avoid fast food as much as you can! My friend Lynn has a hamburger she bought over ten years ago from a fast food restaurant, and she just put it on a plate and left it out. The bugs haven’t eaten it. The mice haven’t eaten it. Mold and fungus won’t grow on it. You know why? Preservatives. Yep, that’s what we’re giving our kids.

One Step At A Time

You are not going to change every bad habit over night. I didn’t either. Start with adding one good thing and taking away one bad thing. One good thing I’d like to suggest to add, as a passionate Shaklee mom, is the Shaklee Incredivites and the Mighty Smarts. The Incredivites are a basic chewable children’s multi-vitamin, and the Might Smarts are Omega-3s in a citrus chew that kids love. However, I give my daughter the regular OmegaGuard, which is the adult Omega-3 fish oil capsules and the adult multi-vitamin Vita Lea. The OmegaGuard costs half what the Mighty Smarts cost and she gets a larger dose of the Omegas. It’s the same issue with the Vita Lea, she gets more for less, and due to her PCOS diagnosis, her endocrinologist wanted her to have more of the nutrients than the children’s vitamins contained. However, as a friend of mine was just telling me yesterday, some kids have trouble swallowing pills, so the kid friendly versions are a good choice.

Would You Knowingly Give Your Little Princess Lead?

by healthybydesignblog

If you give your kids a multi-vitamin, chances are it has lead in it. And maybe worse!

Fact is, even PRENATAL vitamins contain lead as well. The FDA did a study on lead in children’s and prenatal vitamins, and every single product they tested had lead in it. Now lead directly affects your IQ, so how much would you consider to be a safe level for your children? And lead is not the only substance you have to worry about either. Many supplements may also contain mercury, arsenic and even PCBs. The FDA sets safety standards, but because it does not regulate vitamin / food supplements, these companies are not really being held accountable. In fact, you could pull the same product off of various store shelves, and one might be within the FDA limitations for safe amounts of lead, while others have been found to be as much as 15X the recommended limit.

But really, if you had a choice, wouldn’t you rather there be no lead at all in your kid’s multi-vitamin?

That is another reason I give my daughter (pictured here) Shaklee vitamins. I trust them. Shaklee’s standards are higher than the FDA’s. Their foundation principle is, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Awesome, right? As with all their nutritional products, Shaklee tests the raw materials coming in for over 350 known contaminants. To my knowledge, NO OTHER COMPANY DOES THIS. Then before the final product goes out to consumers, they test it again, to make sure that the products were not contaminated in any way during the maufacturing process. Again, to my knowledge, NO OTHER COMPANY DOES THIS.

Why is this important?

Much of the raw materials to make vitamins come from countries like China, and they have very different laws about these things. In fact, in the height of Ginseng popularity a few years back, China had a very wet growing season. In order to control mold and mildew on the ginseng, they sprayed it with a fungicide that is outlawed in the US. Shaklee discovered the carcinogen during routine testing. So batch after batch, Shaklee turned every load of gingseng away for TWO YEARS! The same batches that Shaklee turned away, were sold to other companies who had no issues with selling products laden with carcinogens. Again, in the height of ginseng’s popularity, Shaklee did not have a ginseng product on the market at all. They chose integrity over profit. That’s why I love ’em!

But we were specifically speaking about lead, so here’s another example.

During the production of a particular supplement, the raw materials had been tested and everything was clean. When testing the final product before releasing it to be sold to the public, they found lead. Shaklee got down to business to track down how lead had gotten into the product. They went to the company who they had sub-contracted to take the raw materials from it’s “straight from the field” state, to a laboratory ready state, and meticulously went through every inch of the process, looked at their machinery, etc. What they found was that on one particular machine, the raw materials were literally being pummeled by these heavy round balls. As it turned out, the balls were made of lead, and it was contaminating otherwise pure raw materials. Shaklee had them replace those lead balls and production resumed. However, once again, none of the other companies who use the same facility would have gone through the trouble to test for lead, much less have gone through the expense to find out where the contamination had originated.

I hope you can better understand now why I’m such a fan of Shaklee, and so loyal to both their products and to the company itself. I trust their integrity.

Athlete’s Vitamins Caused Her To Be Banned From Olympics

by healthybydesignblog

Olympic Athletes, as you know, do not take cheap supplements. So if she was at risk, how about you? Can you trust the company that manufactures yours?

Jessica Hardy is an American Olympic Swimmer, holding the world record in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. After joinging thd US Olympic Swim Team in 2008, she was not allowed to compete in the Olympics when an illegal substance was found in her system. A third party lab confirmed that the illegal substance “clenbuterol” was found in her vitamin supplements. She got her reputation back, but she missed the Olympics that year.

More Olympic Athletes
Trust Shaklee Quality

Athletes like Gary Hall, have a much different story to tell. A Type 1 diabetic, he had been told due to his health limitations, he would never be able to compete in the Olympics. BUT, he won a Gold in the 2004 Summer Olympics for the 50 meter freestyle. Gary was also 29 years old at the time, competing against much younger athletes.

Eli Bremer
is amazing. He fences, swims, rides horses, runs, and shoots. It’s hard to believe that this top-ranking pentathlete went from being an overweight kid with limited athletic ability to competing among the world’s best in the Beijing Games in 2008. For him, it’s about setting goals and having something to work toward.

Kent Bostick took up cycling in his mid 20s. More than 30 years later, he’s still pedaling strong. He placed first in the 2009 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championship, is a world-record holder, and received the 2009 Best All-Around Rider Award for the 55–59 age group. What’s it like to beat someone who’s almost half your age? “All right,” he says modestly. But for this 56-year-old, the focus isn’t so much about winning. “It’s about staying healthy and having a good workout,” he says. “Shaklee products help me achieve both.* Time Magazine includes Kent in an interesting article called  “More Than Athletes”.

Cows & Chickens: You’re Eating Whatever They’ve Eaten

by healthybydesignblog

How are diseases like cancer actually encouraged by our modern diet?

I’m a country girl, and when I was little, my granddaddy had cows out in the pasture eating grass. Grass contains Omega 3s, which fight inflammation. Chickens, too, when allowed to do their own thing, will eat grass and bugs. That’s what is meant when you see the term “free range”.

Most of the meat we eat now, is not only full of antibiotics, chemicals, and growth hormones, which are bad for us, too – especially processed meat – but the meat (or egg) is now missing a natural balance between Omega 3s and Omega 6s. We are now eating meat with almost no Omega 3s, and very high in Omega 6. Omega 3s FIGHT inflammation, Omega 6s PROMOTE inflammation. Inflammation is the root of many diseases, particularly arthritis and cancer, etc.

After WWII, farming and agriculture methods changed and instead of cows and chickens being able to feed in lush green pastures, the demand for meat was so high, large farming organizations wanted to speed up the production. Pasture grass feeding was not a cheap way of doing things, as it takes a lot of grass to feed these large animals. The cows and chickens were moved indoors in most cases on a cement floor and fed corn. The animals grew bigger and faster as a result, and the natural balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 in our meat was never the same. (For more information on this, see the book mentioned below, Anti-cancer.)

Genetically Modified Foods (GMO)

Now, one final thing about this subject. Not only are the animals corn fed now rather than grass fed, the corn that they are being fed is genetically modified (GMO). This means that scientists have taken a plant DNA, and spliced it with DNA from BACTERIA, VIRUSES, AND ANIMALS. One result of this process, is that the bacteria in our gut becomes contaminated with this human-engineered stuff. See the plant DNA is combined with the DNA from Bacteria and Viruses, so that it will produce it’s own toxins to kill the bugs that are trying to eat it. An expert explained to us this weekend, that the bacteria in our gut splices genes, too, and we can literally begin to produce our own toxins as a result of consuming GMO foods. One of the world’s largest companies known for GMO foods was literally run out of Germany recently, and guess where they relocated? Raleigh, NC!

Guess what else is full of GMO corn, many of the cereals you and your kids are eating for breakfast. But that’s a topic for another day.

Recommendations Regarding This Topic:

  • My friends Barry and Bonnie Sadler raise grass fed beef at Sadler Farms Natural Beef. You can order it online.
